College budgeting

It takes a person moving out to really realize how much the people who take care of us actually do.  From preparing your own meals, washing your own clothes, to buying groceries, the ins and outs of life really hit us.  Just this last week I was at the Cougareat and I stopped to look at the 4.58$ lunch I had just gotten from Taco Bell and it hit me.  I was not really keeping to my ideal budget.

Budgeting is a hard part of life, but a necessary one for financial success (unless you are making billions of dollars a year).  When it comes down to it, I have found these few simple tips helped me to stick to my budget.

  • Shop when you're not hungry
  • Plan your meals beforehand
  • Stick to the plan - a sale isn't saving you money if you weren't going to buy the item!
And there we have Will Corry's tips for budgeting.  Getting yourself through college is very possible, and if you simply exercise the self-control, you can do it!

How to start a school year

Well, school is now in full swing and the daily routines are beginning to take shape in the lives of the average BYU student.  With new experiences all around, I have been wondering lately how one can truly get the most out of the college experience.  As I have been thinking, a few things have come to mind.

1. Remember why you are here.

For some reason, we are at school.  Some are doing it for a better paying job, some for the social life and the college scene, and others for reasons that I don't know.  If you keep your main goal at the focus of your college experience, then you will get what you were looking for.

2. Sit back and smell the roses occasionally.

We all can find ourselves so busy with things that we want and need to do that we feel like there is not enough time in the day.  Try and find a few moments to stop and just have a personal moment.  Meditate, read, pray, whatever helps you calm down.  All work and no play makes you sick, in spirit and physically.  I'm not saying you need to go crazy, but a little relaxing time will make you more effective in all that you do.

3. Remember who you are.

College is a time of change.  Learning new things may cause you to doubt yourself.  Realize that you are a unique person capable of doing things that only you can.  You don't need to change.  If you want to, then do, but don't let others do it for you.  Fix in your mind who you want to be, and don't vary from the path that will take you there.

We can do it.  After all, it's just college right?
